For context, we've been officially dating for almost 3 months now. He's currently unemployed but makes an ok amount of money playing in a band. He lives with his mom, doesn't pay any bills, so he's able to save a little bit. Sometimes when we go out I offer to pay for the entire thing because I have more money than he does and I don't mind paying things, but it would be nice if once in a while he could buy me some things, simple stuff, give me flowers or write letters. I love gifting other people and I've already given him a book, some shirts, CDs, etc and wrote two letters. Although he is a very loving person and reassures me everyday of his love, he doesn't seem to put any effort and it's starting to annoy me. Today I got to know that he purchased a not very cheap shirt for one of his band mates, and I still got nothing. Am I an asshole here for expecting gifts and little surprises?
I bought a few gifts for my "friend" for Christmas (Im jewish, so, you know that I was really tryina impress her), she was unemployed at the time too, so, while I may have been "being used", i really didn't mind. I like the attention she's giving me, while she's going through a divorce and custody battle.
You should NEVER expect gifts though. That's one of the things i hate about relationships. IS, ENTITLEMENT

No you should not expect any gifts in that situation or so early in a relationship. He needs a job so he can pay rent to his mother, or afford an apartment. Not waste what little he has on trinket for you who has your own income I assume.
Depends on what his love language is. Maybe he doesn't think that kind of thing is important. If it's important to you, you should tell him.
It's not unconditional love if you expect gifts. Maybe his love language towards you is something else.
