Why couples date so long, why can they just get married like cmon 10, 11 years you stilll playing girlfriend

+1 ySome people might be okay with not getting married but I do think some women are waiting and hoping for the guy to pop the question without seeming to desperate or pushy. So we wait, and wait until we realize 8, 10 by ears have gone by. I was with my husband for 8 before we got married, but he was in school at the time and I was only working part time and needed a car. We were still living at home. Once I got everything in order I told him that it's been 8 years and that's long enough to be with someone to get married. If not then we just need to go our separate ways. But thankfully we did get married.
For women who do want to get married and not be a forever girlfriend, you have to set boundaries and not let a man waste away your youthful years. Thats time that could be spent finding a man who is serious. In the same path as you and does want a wife and family. I would say don't date any longer than 1 to 3 years, that's enough time to know if you want to spend the rest of your life with someone or not. at least it should be.
If the girl or guy your dating gets frustrated or annoyed about the idea of getting married when you eventually speak on it, then that let's you know they are not serious and just tagging you along. Don't ve a forever girlfriend/fling giving a man marriage/wife benefits withouts commitment and vice versa.

I have been dating for nearly 4 years (it will be 4 years Christmas week) and did not get engaged until this year and we are not getting married immediately either, he was wanting to get engaged a lot earlier, like 2 years earlier, I let him know I would rather wait, not that I would have said no just that I would prefer to wait to make it official, because I felt like we were in a great phase of life and I did not want to rush it and I was worried things might get weird. However I also would not actually live with him until we got engaged because I did not want my family to judge me or him. I basically lived with him but I still officially had my own place. I wanted the time to be right as far as us being financially stable and really being comfortable with each other and each other's families. Part of it is that it took me a while to trust myself due to some things that I did and that happened in the past. I am super grateful that he gave me the time without pressure. Really every situation is a little different and I do not think you can judge unless you know the couple really well and even then it is really up to them, if they are happy then that is usually good enough. JMO!

Marriage is too dangerous under current law. If you have more assets and earn more, either male or female, you are betting half of everything and possible future earnings on the hope that the other person won't change his or her mind and blow it all up. Under no fault, even a cheater is entitled to your future earnings if you are the primary bread winner.
So think it through: you're a nurse running a section in a major hospital, earning $150K+. Your husband works at CVS in the pharmacy and makes $50K. He cheats, divorces you, and you still have to pay him spousal and if married long enough half or your retirement. Bad deal.00 Reply
+1 yMarriage is expensive! Rings cost like $10,000 on average I believe. Some weddings can be as high as six figures depending on how grand it is. There are lots of fiscal implications as well - the breadwinner in the relationship puts a lot at stake if there is ever a divorce. Typically the man gets screwed over with alimony in these cases, but not always.

because they don't have faith their relationship will last forever or they know they aren't willing to stick together through thick and thin or they want their freedom to flirt / talk to other women.
they will give you some BS excuse such as "marriage would make no difference to our current living together situation". But come on... living together is not the same as marriage. If you truly loved them enough, you would want to be legally bound to them. If you truly loved the person you are with, you would do anything to be bound to them, which is marriage.

+1 yPeople want to take things the easy way even in Latin countries, not just in the USA. Getting married requires two good incomes, responsibilities and assets shared. Meanwhile many are too busy doing the cohabitation thing, my boyfriend and I are doing the waiting till marriage method; moving in after marriage.
I refuse to be a man's forever live-in girlfriend and waste more years of my life.
00 Reply 500 opinions shared on Dating topic. if they were like 16 when they met then it makes sense they were probably waiting to grow up and become a bit financially secure however if you meet at 26 then waiting till 36 is ludicrous. If I met at 26 I’d want to be married within 2 years. I don’t want to put marriage off until after 30. So it depends a lot on age for me.

@Shiface92 Yeah, but it's all in their heads. They mind-fuck themselves.
If those couples hadn't tricked themselves into being unhappy by raising their expectations, they would still be in love and still be together.

+1 ywell think about the benefits. what do you get from marriage that you didn't have before if you were already dating for 10 years? nothing, except ginormous bill to pay. so after 10 years, you might as well just keep doing what you did. not very likely that they'll just leave you behind suddenly. and it's not like marriage would stop people from leaving either.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yMaybe they started dating when they were young? They’ll need time to work until they’re independent and stable enough before jumping into marriage.
I have a couple of friends who started dating freshman year of high school (been together for 12 years) and they just recently started considering marriage bcs they’re finally settled enough in their careers. They needed time to grow into proper adults.

Not ready for marrriage? wasting years of dating
Opinion Owner+1 yWould you marry your boyfriend at 16 tho? It’s not logical to do so, they’ll end up wasting years of youth 😔
- +1 y
Why do you say that your boyfriend would waste years of youth by marrying you? Aren't you a valuable person? Aren't you worth it?
And he's spending time with you right now regardless. So how is he wasting his time? Unless you have low self esteem?
Opinion Owner+1 y@Jamie05rhs I didn’t have a boyfriend back when I was 16 and marriage is definitely off the table for me. I wanted to live my teenage years as a teen, learning the ropes on how to become an adult, learning more about myself, etc before I build a family, I need some time to build myself first
- +1 y
That's understandable.
So I guess the scenario you were describing was a hypothetical?
I still don't see how he would be wasting his time, though.

In the 10 years I was with her, she turned mentally and emotionally abusive. Im glad I put an end to it when I did. My friends and family could see it. I can only imagine the level of dysfunction had I stayed and had a kid with her.
10 ReplySome people such as myself don’t see the value in the “term” marriage. It’s a term a document you sign nothing more. Personally I have first hand know many couples wasted a tremendous amount of money for a wedding only to be divorced a few years later. I know you said married and nothing about a wedding but they go hand in hand in most cases. For what. A title. No thanks
20 ReplyI think depends on the people. We only got married after 11 years and it didn’t really change anything. At the end of the day it’s a piece of paper, it doesn’t make your love more legitimate as people get married for money, obligation or citizenship too.

@Haha456
This basically. All living together does is make you waste more time into playing house, where it only gives you an idea of what living with them would be like. You're not sharing assets, responsibilities nor full commitment where you can't just walk out the door easily anything you have an argument. - +1 y
@Vesuvius87 @admles
When your wife gets sick, you have the OBLIGATION to take care of her. When your wife incurs medical bills, you have the OBLIGATION to pay for it with your estate. If you take out a million-dollar loan to start a business during the marriage, your wife who is a stay home mom- would also have the responsibility of paying the loan back. Any tasks that your wife is too busy to do, she has the right to tell you to help her with her activities in her absence. If your husband is sick, you have the OBLIGATION to care for him regardless of how busy you are. He is the priority in your life. It is not a choice to do whatever you want.
This is VERY different from just two roommates just living together enjoying each other's company. There are a lot of obligations associated with marriage. If you think marriage is the same as finding an apartment with a roommate, then you shouldn't get married because you clearly do not understand what marriage entails. - +1 y
Marriage is basically two individuals intertwined in the heart, soul, financially, emotionally with each other for the rest of their lives. Both are no longer considered two individuals but 1 UNIT. The husband can represent the wife. The wife can represent the husband. Both individuals hold each other to first priority and are ultimately responsible for each other.
Now the only time where two people who claim to be madly in love with each other but would never intertwine themselves with the person they're so madly in love with is because they are afraid of taking on the responsibilities and obligations of marriage.
+1 ybecause marriage doesn’t always make a commitment stronger

13 Reply- +1 y
@leighbee But if they're not breaking up when they're not married, then why would they break up when they're married?
- +1 y
@Jamie05rhs because it gives an incentive for divorce. If you're the girlfriend and you cheat or give up or just act like a shithole you will get tossed to the curb with nothing to show for it. In marriage now even if you act like a total asshole you have a golden parachute and you can be a biatch and either the husband has to put up with it or you get divorced and typically get to throw him out and have him cover your basic expenses for life.

22 Reply- +1 y
I keep seeing this excuse all the time. The government is already in yournpersonal affairs, they know where you live, work, how much taxes you pay or owe etc. Hell they probably track your every movement when your online or using your phone. If you don't think the Government already knows about your whereabouts then you are highly mistaken.
- +1 y
I am totally agree with what you said , but why we should invite the government to force thier unjust rules, complicated codes , and bring dozen of verity laws to our life , i know they keep an eye on everything, but let's not give them permission to step in and force commands in our relationship!

@Vesuvius87 Nowadays people don't want responsibilities. But if you're married then there are formal problems with ending it.
- +1 y
Indeed. People are just focus on the passionate love, honeymoon period where you see your partner as the best person in the world without flaws and everything is all sunny and roses. That's not responsibilities, that's just a short-lived period, where things end when you get to know their flaws and don't want to deal with that. No wonder relationships don't last.

Being married at least makes you work on the issues and tolerate their flaws... not just walk out the door after any argument or differences.

@Gooddaze Heterosexual marriage is an unequal institution. Women on average do more of the unpaid and undervalued work of households, they work more each day, and they are more aware of this inequality than their husbands. They are more likely to sacrifice their individual leisure and career goals for marriage.
- +1 y
@Gooddaze Yeah it's an interesting fact that I recently learned about when doing some research on socioeconomics.
- +1 y
@pers0n in general men also metabolize faster due to larger size and more muscle mass… on average. I fail to see the relevance in biological and metabolic differences, when it comes to the institution of marriage..
- +1 y
@Gooddaze because by definition marriage is an institution.
- +1 y
@Gooddaze lol an institution is defined as “ a society or organization founded for a religious, educational, social, or similar purpose.
Or
an established law, practice, or custom.” - +1 y
@Gooddaze I am married
- +1 y
@pers0n I didn’t say that at all, statistics show that on average a woman’s work load increases while a man’s work load decreases when they get married.
- +1 y
is the suggestion that women are saying no to marriage when men are asking?
- +1 y
@lightbulb27 Some are for sure, but it's more so that women are less inclined to get married, and more inclined to wait for the right person if they desire to get married at all.
- +1 y
I wonder if that is a generational shift? I can't say that I see that in the middle aged group. Or maybe it is regional.
- +1 y
@lightbulb27 it’s definitely a societal shift in the way people see relationships and commitments. People want relationships that better their lives, not make them worse.
- +1 y
makes sense. If only we taught them to make life better with the one they chose... where is that being done in society/media... only place I know... church or family. Otherwise, that social shift means "I'm not happy, I'll find better place"... that's a strike against security and trust.
