Has a person ever told you to get a job first before you could date them?

In my case, lots of guys who I have encountered with online dating. Have asked me what I do for a living and what my income is. In the end, each guy has told me to get a job before I start dating them and for a long term relationship.

So now I have been job hunting to earn more income and become a potential dating partner for someone in the future.

Has anyone else encountered this?

I never got this requirement directly like that but I can easily see why some guys want a woman who is financially independent, especially in the US where you don't have a lot of public services.
They don't want to get involved with someone who wouldn't contribute equally financially, or don't trust to pay for someone they are not sure to marry, yet. And this isn't wrong anyway: if someone doesn't have a job and is not autonomous past 30, it feels like they still don't have their stuff together for some reason and who were used to depend on others so far until now. People might not want this responsibility right at the beginning of dating (or ever). Of course some would, but you will surely run into someone who doesn't, too, and both are legit. It simply shows they know what they are looking for and it doesn't mean you must become compatible with them, others will come across anyway with a different view.
If you aren't into being autonomous with your own career then you should look for men who want a "stay at home mother / housewife", if that's what you aim to be.
And remember always: if a guy wants you to have a job as a requirement, you should also make sure he is into doing housekeeping / parenting stuff equally as you, too. Nowadays a lot of women are requested to be workers, housewives and main parental figures at home, which usually lead them to burn out. So if they want equity in finances, then you require equity in house keeping and parenting too.
Being 30+ generally means that your target are men who know what they want and who look for settling down with requirements and compatibility, it's not time for hopeless unaware crushes based only on blind passion anymore like in the early 20s (well, unless you date someone much younger with that mindset, of course).

There is an abundance of manipulative and broke women today, and men always lose more resources when dating. So we've gotta be smart. They could have gone about it differently, but you're a stranger, so there's really no need to be anything other than up front. Women have changed, men have adapted. It is what it is.
