Why text first then act really uninterested?

This has been happening to me a lot recently, not just with potential partners, but with friends as well. I'll have someone text me first, which I interpret as them trying to start a conversation. However when I respond, they either leave me on read or act completely disinterested, sending short and dry messages back. It's like... why did you reach out to me at all? Did I not give the response they were looking for? Perhaps there's no logic to it, but why does this happen?

It could just be that the person is oblivious to what they're doing. One of my biggest mistakes earlier in life was assuming that other people had the interpersonal skills and self awareness to identify when they were behaving poorly. Most people absolutely do not have the ability to notice that about themselves.
