I am currently dating someone in their last year of med school. Then he will go on to residency where he will be paid pretty low for the next 5 years. As long as he is smart with his money (he is) I am fine. What’s more important is the financial style of both partners more than the amount that they make. If one partner is frugal and one of frivolous with spending it’s going to cause fights.

Ph. D. students aren't conventional students and it takes time to graduate. Stipends are generally lower than guys of the same age who are in jobs. One may take themselves but there can be lifestyle differences with a girl who is not into higher studies. Will that bother you?
