It's hard to give you specific questions that aren't awkward to ask your crush.

The reason, is that different people with different personalities are going to end up asking different questions.

I can give you some advice though:

First, you are certainly 'on the right track' in the way you're thinking about this as "what QUESTIONS" can you ask your ex. That is indeed the easiest way to strike-up a conversation with somebody. Ask questions.

Something I can tell you, from lots of personal experience: People like talking about themselves.

So that is something you want to keep in mind when you're talking to him/asking him questions. If your questions are about HIM (what he likes/dislikes, what he thinks, asking about his recent trip etc)

It's really quite easy to get almost anyone talking about themselves. If you show him you're an 'interested audience' by asking follow-up questions related to whatever it is he's saying (in response to your original question) you... will find yourself in a "conversation" before you even realize it.

The key is to kinda 'let it flow naturally'. In othert words, I would recommend NOT trying to come up with a list of questions to ask him. Personally, I think you would be better to come up with a 'lead-in' question (like the first thing you're going to ask him) and then just use a STRATEGY (rather than pre-planned questions) to navigate the rest of the conversation.

That "strategy" is what I described above. Asking questions while keepin the focus on "him".

So you also want to add in your own comments about yourself too.

e. g.

you- did you go anywhere this summer?

him- yea, I went fishing with my dad and my uncle whereverthefuck.

you- oh that's cool, is that a trip you take every year.

or

you- it's really great that you've got such a close relationship with your dad. Are you close with your mom too? (or throw in there something about your own relationship with your parents before asking about his mom)

Or

you-- That sounds fun, although I hate fishing! Don't you feel sorry for those poor little worms you use for bait?

Or

you- Cool, did you catch anything big? What's the biggest fish you ever caught?

see, you can really go several directions for anything he answers. ANd from there, you do the same thing. You ask one of several possible questions that naturally follow from whatever he has just said.

True, every now and then you might need another 'lead in' question if the subject exhausts itself. But lead-in questions should be fairly simple and broad. Just keep the focus on HIM (his life/thoughts/feelings etc).

Also keep in mind, that the conversation goes both ways. It's not like an interview where you're responsible for asking questions and the other person answers. He'll have questions, and things to say to you too! (part of why I suggest not planning questions).

I don't know if you'll end up finding that helpful. You may not. I can guarantee you that it works (extremely well). But it isn't as easy for certain personality-types to just DO this.
