A guy I met on an app starts talking about how he hopes for a relationship, is this a red flag?

Not in and of itself. It depends entirely on the nature of your conversation.

But a big part of two people meeting on an app is making sure you're both looking for the same thing. So if this guy was basically trying to let you know what he was looking for from women on the app (a relationship) that's just fine. The purpose of that would be to basically prompt you to also say "I'm also looking for a relationship (as opposed to casual dating or no-strings attached hookups) with the men you're talking to on the app. ANything like that, is totally normal. BUT if a relationship isn't why YOU are hoping for from the app, you need to let this guy know. You are looking for diffent things, and he'll just wish you well and move-on.

But, a guy talking about a relationship inappropriately soon, or one that moves inappropriately quickly into "serious" (when it's not mutual) is definitely a red flag.

So what happened exactly?

I think he is being honest and there is nothing wrong with that.
He didn’t say he - loves you - specifically. But that in his near future he wants to be in a relationship for a potential marriage I assume if he wants a family.
So it’s not a red flag. It’s a red flag let’s say if he asks you to be together of the first day you meet or smth like this.

Guys might say they hope for a relationship meaning he hopes to use your body for meaningless sex OR he could be genuinely hoping for a relationship and just honestly telling you what he wants. Why is that a red flag?

He's not being a pervert trying to flirt or impress you a lot so he can get closer to you. Respect his honesty. It's hard to find guys who are that honest.
