We met online chatted for a while now we met in person is this normal how it’s going?

So far we have only met 1 time only in - person-
We are having our second meet up on December 31 to have lunch together in a restaurant and than go to a Starbucks after: He asked if we can meet for dec31 first I didn’t ask for it.
After our first meet up while having coffee he asked what day I’m free I said I’m free til end of new year.
After that day I messaged him I like him he only said— I’m glad to hear that— 😟
he has also changed in messaging style he seems to be more careful what emoji he sends and doesn’t message as before. But when I message him he replies quickly:
I don’t know if this is ok to say since we don’t know each other for long and not met enough.
His answer is making me pessimist for our 2nd meet up. I feel discouraged and sad.
Should I give it a try and meet him for New Years lunch meet up , after lunch we are having coffee together.
Should I open the topic in person that I like him?

My friend
says people need time to know each other and that some couple stay friends or date for months before becoming a couple..
