Why would my ex only want a situationship?

How do I get him to commit? He told me that he loves me but when we hit the four month mark, he sabotaged things because he has commitment issues and he want to impress his friends.

You don't get him to commit. He's already demonstrated that he's not going to. Plus, at this point, if he did, how would you feel knowing it's reluctant? Begrudging? You're not going to get him to commit.
