Here is the rules I was taught, goes for guys and girls... Start with hello, if they respond ask one or two SIMPLE questions along with "how are you?" You live around here? What do you do for a living? then wish him or her a great day and bounce! If they leave smiling it was a good interaction... if it was awkward or you get very cold response, it was not meant to be. bottom line keep it simple short and to the point without being creepy stalky etc.
