They can work, and if built right are the best way to find a match, however the popular ones are all owned my matchgroup, and are specifically designed to prevent you from seeing and contacting people who are compatible with you, so you keep paying subscription fees. So yes, but only the ones that aren't scams, and unfortunately, almost no one uses those.

In the early 2000s they all worked, but most people didn't use them. Over time however, features that were helpful like profile, interest, name, keyword, and region searching got removed, and features that were unhelpful like message paywalls, limited number of likes, inbox storage limits, and making your profile invisible to people you didn't like yet, were added.
