Guys, what prompts you to tell a woman “regardless of the degree of intimacy, I genuinely want to remain friends”?

I’m curious what circumstances or types of women would prompt a man to say this. He and I have spent some time together, but have never slept together. However, during our time together we were very romantic and agreed we had never met anyone like the other before. The reason we’re not together is because he’s currently in a polyamorous relationship and I am a monogamous person. So he could really just let all of this go, but he made the statement above after I let him know I wasn’t polyamorous and if he found himself also wanting monogamy then we should date seriously.
