Guys, would you ever make it clear to a girl you like that you just want to be friends? If so, why?

A guy who shows all the signs of liking me told my mom he wants to be friends with me when she asked what his intentions are. He also said "thats what friends are for" when I asked him to so something for me. He constantly praises my personality and looks, texts me, and approaches me. But his words say otherwise.

Yes i could for a couple different reasons.
1. I think it is important to be friends before partners
2. If I value there friendship so much i wouldn’t want to lose that by getting involved romantically

Its very uncomfortable to be put in such an adversarial position. You can not truly go by whats said under those conditions. I have been put in that position before and its very unsettling. You need to ask him see if its a different answer.

If I was in that situation, I would have probably tried to say something political. Like, "She's a wonderful person, and I enjoy her company.". Lol.
