Because one strives for independence does not mean one needs to severe ties or burn bridges with existing Relationships. I suppose the reason for independence or the "full story" may mandate a different point of view.

One thing I do know that if either sex treats the other like a child or some would say "to good" then there can be a sense of smothered that's odd. I have been spoiled before by one seeing things that I needed to do things before I did. She had been around a little longer than I had ;-) I appreciate that person and still do Christmas cards a decade later.

Not enough info. If that person does that stuff and abuses no then it is not stupid to leave. If that person does all that and you don't like that they like broccoli, then yeah, probably stupid to leave. You're not giving us all the info.
