I don’t think any relationship built upon dependence is a healthy relationship. It creates a very weird dynamic where the people in the relationship don’t feel free or comfortable being themselves. It also leads to a situation where boundaries can’t be established or enforced. Boundaries in a relationship are incredibly healthy. People have boundaries in every element of their lives from childhood. And not having those boundaries leads to a situation of spiraling out of control. Finally, eventually it’ll lead to resentment from you. Which is completely justified.


So I’d recommend setting a boundary. He needs to get a job and support himself. And it’s fine if you set a timeframe on that and give him a bit of time. But once that deadline is up, you’re done supporting him. He needs to support himself. And you need to enforce that. If he doesn’t, I think the relationship is kinda doomed.


It’s SO unfair to you to be supporting him on this level. On some level it’s like throwing money down the drain. And that’s not fair to you.


I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’ve been in a very similar situation before, and it was awful. If I could go back and do things differently, I would have.
