Did you ever try to rekindle an old date or hookup that didn’t work out?

Usually I don’t contact people with whom I had dated previously being afraid of potential awkwardness. I have a friend who said she did that if she was not in a serious relationship, she would contact them even if they broke up with her. To me that sounds like a scary thing to do because you don’t what the other person is up to in a few months. If you had the courage how would you start the conversation again?
