First of all, try talking to him. Maybe ask him for help on an assignment to start things off. The goal is to learn about him as a person and see him for who he is. Avoid putting him on a pedestal.
I've had a huge crush on someone in high school before and it was always torture for me because I never spoke to him or confessed to him. Suppressing feelings isn't always so easy, so it's better to confess eventually or at least write it all down in a letter as if you're sending it to him. Even if you get rejected, it'll be easier for you to muster up the courage to confess to the next person you like in the future.
Find another guy to like and take your mind off the current one.
Just ask him out.
