+1 yI don't think of it as "dating down", nor do I think one should 'date down', you should find someone who is a good match for you. There are immature 80 year olds, and mature 18 year olds. I often date women younger than me; more than 90% of the women I've dated have been younger, but that doesn't mean I will date someone just because they are younger. I have had people ask me the typical "how can you have anything in common with someone so young?", but it's never really been an issue. I've also met younger women whom I've had nothing in common with, who I couldn't imagine dating. The chemistry just wasn't there, even if they were physically attractive. My current partner is 22, and I've had a couple other dating age gaps significantly larger than 5 years. I had a couple girlfriends ~10 years younger and we have very good chemistry and connection. We never sat around thinking "I just can't relate to you, you're too young/old." (which is what most people seem to think the problem is or should be.)

+1 yWho ends up with the same age partner anyways? Most couples definitely have some type of age gap. What couple you know that shares the same birthday? I think at 30 is the best time to experience maybe different age gaps. Maybe you need a younger guy who’s not boring and spontaneous. Or maybe you’re the spontaneous one and a mature man would love to take you out! Overall the personality of the person should override the number of age they are. And I think if you were on the fence with multiple options of age shouldn’t be the first thing to consider and it should be how they make you feel first. I guess as long as they’re not extremely too young or too old; you should be able to like whoever you like. I think once you’re over 55 you can have a 12 year age gap plus or minus and nobody would care at 30, a 5 year age gap is perfectly fine. When you’re 42 you just bumped yourself into 7 year age gap territory lol. Who would really care if someone is 42 and the other is 49, or even a 35 year old getting with a 42 year is fine!

+1 yIt’s fine. That’s like late twenties so that’s not a big deal. I don't know what you mean by dating down. If the younger person is really nice or really cute or both that would be dating up.

@cth2188 ok if it's toxic why not create your own scene, that isn't toxic, and is what you want romantic relationships to be. get out of the box, I'm sure there are others who feel the same way. I agree there is a lot of toxicity, but I don't take part in those aspects, and really enjoy romance.
- +1 y
I mean, if you don't want romance, that's fine as well. Being asexual or aromantic is totally valid as well.

@zeitgeist057 I don't have a dating pool to even select from
+1 yThere is nothing more or less wrong with a person of a specific gender in their 30s dating someone of the opposite gender 5 years younger.
The real problem is that there is a double standard. Men are enjoying it, women are talking about it to each other.
You already know what I mean. There are endless examples. Women with the same level of education and qualifications years of experience get paid less. When men "hook up" a lot they get praise from men and women.
When women express their enjoyment for sex by doing the exact same thing, they are called bad names behind bad names behind their backs (or to their faces) by men and women alike. Etc, etc and on and on.
A lot of men like to think they are more liberal minded or more of a feminist than they really are. Yes, women can vote in a democracies.
But can you honestly tell me, ladies, that, boyfriends/parners/husband's would be okay staying at home while you went back to work...
if you made 2.5 as much as your husband and had other young kids...
I wonder if the majority of the ladies who reply say they expect their man to be okay with being stay at home dads.
As far as men's opinions, they will a wildcard. The truth, a very convincing lie, very explosive/angry opinions and everything in between.
And for those stay at home dads who aren't single and aren't independently wealthy with their partner/spouse this you are in the minority and this is NOT directed at or towards you.00 Reply
+1 yMeh... I think with men... younger is just the better option. They'll look better longer, not as fat and wrinkly. Less baggage is the big one... I mean just try to get with a chick that has kids in tow and is still simping in her mind for Chad and Tyrone. It's not going to work out. 5 years isn't that big of a number either.
Look... if you were a single guy, would you want the chick that just wants to be serious now because of kids, money, or because she hit the wall and aging like milk?
What about a chick that just wants to have a drinking contest with you? Out of the two... which sounds more enjoyable... or at the very least friendly?
00 ReplyI don't think anything about it it's not something even worth worrying about.
Around 25-37 you are going to find a lot of people who are at the same place as you in life. the same place intellectually, physically emotionally etcetera.
One example is a 28 year old woman, single mother with a kid. and a 35 year old man who had kids a bit later in life but is a single dad. The "place" they are at in life, is more or less the same.
A 5 year gap in your 30's or late 20's is not the same as a 5 year gap in your teens or early 20's. The equivalent of that in your 30's would be more like a 10 year difference.00 Reply- 1K opinions shared on Dating topic.
+1 yThere's nothing wrong with it. My mother started dating my step-dad when she was 33 and he was 23 in 2009. For him, he already had a kid and was in a similar place mentally as my mother. Although, they did run into some issues in the beginning, since he was in a different place in life being much younger.
I think that's really the most important thing to focus on in age gaps or any relationship - if the both people want the same things and are ready to do that10 Reply
+1 yIn general, age is just a number, and what matters most is the level of compatibility, shared interests, and emotional connection between two people. As long as both individuals are consenting adults and are happy with each other, the age difference should not be a major concern. However, it is important to be aware of any potential power imbalances that may arise from significant age differences and to ensure that both parties are entering the relationship willingly and with open communication.
10 ReplyAre you referring to a woman dating a younger man or a man dating a younger woman?
From the guys perspective, I'd say a 29 yr old guy would be dating down by dating a 34 yr old woman and would be dating up by dating a woman 5 years younger than himself.
I can't speak for how a woman feels
10 Reply
+1 yIt generally doesn't matter as long as both of you have fairly similar outlook to life.
For the 30+ woman dating a 5 years younger man, especially if he's still in his mid 20s, then interests and level of commitments may differ.
Used to date a woman who was 32 when I was 26. It was alright but I didn't care much for her 2 kids.
Now at 36 am dating a 24, generally no issues.
00 Reply1.4K opinions shared on Dating topic. Its perfect , so long as the female is not the older party , the male should always be the older partner , god , I'd never go out with someone my age , and it would need to be more than 5 years younger also... unless an incredible specimen of nature.

+1 yNothing, five years isn't much. My Mom and Dad had a seven year age difference, Dad born in 1961 and my Mom 1968.
My Oma and Opa, 1933 and 1937.

+1 yWhat do I really think?
Not my problem, not my concern. It's not illegal. They're both adults. I dunno why people care so much. I'm 29, so what if I date a lady who is 24? Honestly, why should anyone care if I date a woman who is 19 or 20? That's still considered a legal adult, and it's my relationship, only my concern.
It only becomes an issue if it's abusive and boundaries are crossed to the point where outside intervention is necessary. Otherwise, it's not anyone's problem.00 Reply- 995 opinions shared on Dating topic.
+1 yI wouldn't say it's dating down to date someone who's younger. It's hard to say one is dating down because people are looking for different things from a partner.
00 Reply Its a good idea if you can manage it. I am impressed when guys pull it off. 5 years isn't really that big a difference though. Anything over 10 is impressive.

10 Reply 5 years isn’t much. That would make them 25. The only time I would see that as a problem would be if you were 20 trying to date a 15 year old kid.
