Politics are without a doubt the worst and stupidest thing to talk about on a first date. That is something you save after you are a few dates in and on the brink of becoming exclusive. Too early, you show that it is a very important thing in your relationship that will take precedence, even more than other things that should be before it.

With how touchy politics are, someone even mentions ill of one politician or supports one ideal that the other doesn't? You are automatically the enemy of the radical side you hate. Doesn't support abortion? How dare they! Alt right fascists!

Wants stricter gun laws? They are gun hating liberal retards that hate law abiding citizens!

Really. No point for that bullshit out the gate. Wait until there is mutual respect and rapport before having serious talks about that because then you at least know other parts about their personality that may be more important than something trivial like politics that have become way too entrenched in one's life and priority list. Didn't have that conversation with my girlfriend until we became exclusive. Probably one of the best decisions we made as a couple.

Religion fairly early, because that is a deep worldview issue. Politics when it looks like it is becoming serious, because it is too easy to judge someone as a one-dimensional person because of that.

I think it all depends on how important it is to YOU. I personally don't care too much about what most people believe about most things. I have all kinds of friends who believe all kinds of different things and it doesn't bother me. So I wouldn't really focus on bringing anything in particular up unless it was relevent to something we were already doing or talking about.

Personally I'd like to get religion out of the way on the first date. I'm an atheist and I understand that most believers wouldn't be open to dating an atheist so I'd rather not waste their time. Plus I wouldn't want to be with someone who's overly religious as well.
Same thing with politics, for better or for worse, political alignments and opinions often are telling of a person's worldview and morals.
