Can frequently go on a date considered as friend thing to do?

Some people consider that when you go on a date, means both party wants more than friend and trying to see if they will work, and impossible a friend will always go on 1-1 date. But some find it just a normal thing to do with friends.

I don't know I have never gone out on dates with my guy friends it was always only in group outings..

Friends hanging out is one thing (movies, dinner etc), but a date is a prelude to something more.
