When we discover we've been lied to, no matter what the lie, we start questioning every other thing that person has said and will say. Starting out a relationship with a lie is setting it up for failure.

If we're in a long-term relationship that is open and honest, and we discover a recent lie, we're not as cautious, as we've already experienced a pattern of trust. We look at the overall pattern, and early in a relationship, there isn't much of a pattern.
