Do you respect your girlfriend opinions?

Question

Lets say my girlfriend wanted to cut her hair shorter. She asks me for the opinion and I tell her that she already looks perfect and beautiful with that haircut of hers. But she declines my opinion and cuts it without listening to me. Apart from the fact that she didn't respect my opinion.

So How would an guy or if the roles were reversed would react during this situation?

It’s one thing to respect an opinion, it’s another to not have your own opinions.

You can accept feedback without immediately folding and doing something different from what you originally planned.

Like an author of a book listens to feedback from readers. They may end up going with their original idea, they may change their trajectory a little, or they may do exactly what their readers want.

As long as your opinion was heard, understood, valued, and considered, that should be enough.

Letting you control her is not the same as respecting you.

But, valuing your feedback and allowing your opinions to influence her decision making IS.

I respect my S/O’s opinions. However, I view it as information to consider, rather than instructions to follow.

If I want to do something and she wants to do something else, if it involves both of us, I usually try to meet in the middle, something we’re both happy with.

If she doesn’t want to be steamrolled by you and you don’t want to be steamrolled by her, you both need to build the habit of negotiating to find win/win solutions to everything.

In this scenario, it’s her hair, it’s her body, and you don’t own her — so ultimately, she should have the final say.

Okay. If she asked your opinion then it’s just that, an opinion. Women tend to be very exploratory in their styles. Not all, but many women are keen to try new clothing styles, makeup, hair colors or styles, and so on. It part of the fun of being a woman I suppose. You are sure entitled an opinion but - short of something radical like shaving all her hair off or getting a face tattoo, I think it’s wise policy to be open with your tastes and preferences yet supportive of whatever she wants to try. Let her do her thing and show her your okay with her as she figures out who she is. Guessing by your own age she’s probably in her mid 20s and this is par for the course at that age to me.

I did respect my partner’s opinions A LOT.

When my family wanted me to do something, they asked my partner to tell me.

They knew, I’d do if my partner asked.

I don’t know, love really does change us. I am now back to my stubborn and bad self.

I miss how good I was when I was in love. I was surprised by my own gentleness.

I always respect my SO's opinion. That doesn't mean I always agree with it. And I may not follow her advice, though I always respect her advice/opinion.

I think most woman are silly and overreact a lot of the times, but experience has showed me that woman are 100% smarter than men, and they are much more cautious whereas we are brave but reckless.

Now when my now wife gives me advice or express her opinion I listen to her, respect it and consider it. Now, I listen to her 100% of the times but I don't go with what she recommended 100%. When I am sure she is overreacting and nothing wrong will happen, I do what I think is better.

Or for preferences, etc, most of the times we go with what she likes because I rather make her happy, but when I really dislike something I fight back I'm not a yes ma'am guy.

You’ve implied that her “listening to you” means not cutting her hair because you didn’t approve. This isn’t how relationships works. She heard your opinion. She just didn’t agree with it. It’s her hair and she doesn’t have any obligation to adhere to what you want.

I definitely respect my wife's opinions. She has good input. We ask for each other's opinions on lots of things. But an opinion is just that. We don't always agree.

If it's about something that will effect both of us, such as furniture or what color to paint the walls, we discuss it and come to a mutual agreement.

An opinion is not an order. I don't follow orders and don't expect her to, either. We don't tell each other what clothes to wear or what to do with our hair.

If you think that you have an absolute say over what she does with her hair then maybe you should move to a country such as Dubai or Saudi. You are after all whining about respect when you don't respect her opinion. So you are better fit for a country in which woman do not have any opinion

Of course, but that doesn't mean I always follow her opinion. I'd try a new hairstyle or food if she suggested one, but I wouldn't cut my hair short or change my whole diet just because she wanted me to. I would have to want to also. Otherwise that's a great way to build resentment in a relationship.

I have the same situation except it's my husband who likes getting a less flattering hair cut. I prefer it a little longer but at the end of the day, it's just hair and there's still enough of it.

You're making this a respect thing, but it's really not. You view of what is attractive might just be narrow and that's something you can work on.

my wife is the only person I ask for an opinion from. It doesn't mean I will listen to that opinion but I definitely respect her opinion because women view the world differently than men do. Many times that simple interaction can result in better choices from me on a situation because she brought up something I was not considering.
