What does it mean when a guy jokingly says you don’t have a choice in dating him?

So I’ve recently got into a relationship with my 5 month long situationship (he’s a marine and wanted to wait to see how we would do while he was gone) but for a while I was worried he wasn’t gonna commit until last Saturday he brought up that we said we would talk after he came back and I said yes I did everything he’s asked of me and he just said “yeah! We’re dating!” And i said “you’re not gonna even ask me?” And he goes “oh you think you have a choice in this?” As a joke which I found endearing but what exactly does that mean? (Im dense)

Without knowing him, I don't think you should jump to conclusions so quickly, but watch for red flags whether he keeps saying similar stuff similarly in different situations as well...
