It may have been an attractive career 20-30 years ago but today, absolutely not.

I come from a family where some members have been in that position and I can say that when you have a family, it is less than a nice thing to know that your loved one is always away, mainly in times like today when families gather together to celebrate Christmas but one of the member is away.

Furthermore, 30 years ago, crew could stay abroad a few days to enjoy more exotic places but nowadays, no crew has more than 12 hours at the turnaround point. If the next plane is scheduled in a few days, then the company positions them as dead head crew to the next station where they have to take over from the inbound crew.

Also, having to get up at 4AM to get to your flight that leaves at 6AM is not what I consider a pleasure. I am not even talking about the stress that management imposes on the schedules and the cost factor. Sure with 20 years' seniority, you can get a pretty penny but always remember that your ATPL (airline transport license) is only valid for 6 months. If you fail your simulator training every 6 months, you may lose your license.

It is far from a dream job. Very far.

The whole point is you do it if you’re very passionate about flying. For people like me it’s good because I’ve had this obsession for aviation since 4 years old. Also it depends a lot where you live, some dentists live very well and others not so much. Depends on the airline etc…
