Would being a flight attendant be a good job?

A lot greatly depends on carrier, also if short or long haul.
there is a lot of competition for slots with the majority of airlines. Short haul can almost be a 9-5 job but different cities, but often a regular route. Which invariably means same business passengers etc.
for long haul, I think airline becomes more important, some treat their staff well, some are still - you are a woman…
The training is for some fairly intensive, with first aid, dealing with problems, crisis management, being polite and firm when the aircraft is on fire, usual stuff lol.
With any job like this, the big question is, what do you want to get out of it?
as any position that is public / customer facing you will get abuse, it’s your fault that there is fog in some air port, it’s your fault the seat they have is next to some xxx person etc.
I would really suggest looking in to it. There are some decent airline, cabin staff orientated forums and they are very helpful with answering questions.
Make sure you look at what safety training they do as well, you have to pass training.
I know an ex-flight attendant from long ago (she left before 9/11)
She wanted to buy a house but because her husband is a pilot, a lot of money and an empty house is an open invite to criminals but she was also being put forward for head position but didn't want the workload so those combined factors lead to her leaving the job
Now she's my mother's cleaner a few hours a week purely for being social because her husband spends his time in hotels and flying a private jet these days for £250k a year
£12k a year in the late 70's, that was buying a house money, a terrible one but nonetheless a house
So like £100k now if you take official inflation rates.
Points mentioned by my niece who's been working for as an international Flight Attendant for 10 years now:
1. You'll become a well-traveled individual, especially if you're part of the international crew that goes to foreign destinations.
2. You'll learn about other cultures & geographies.
3. You'll get to taste various cuisines.
4. You'll learn about humility when you realize some people will consider you as a "dignified maid" and only that.
5. You get to exercise your patience with troubling management issues.
6. You get to exercise your patience with troubling passengers to the max.
7. You'll learn how to dress like a model or better.
8. Your family will appreciate the airline discounts & perks.
9. "Oh, dear God!" and "Have mercy on us!" will be phrases you'll be saying much more often than you'd imagine.
10. You'll later realize that the pay you earned was not enough to justify the hardships of being a Flight Attendant.
This is actually a far more loaded question than you may realize.
It depends what airline you work for. It depends what type of flights you're doing. Are you flying halfway around the world or are you just flying domestic? Are you going to be on a plane for 13 hours or you going to be on a plane for an hour and 13 minutes?
From what I know about it is stressful. And you have to have ultimate customer service dealing with psychos on a plane. Back in the day I would have found it to be an alluring position but now with the way things are going I don't know if it's really all that it's cracked up to be anymore.
I had a friend who was formerly a flight attendant with Air Jordan. This was back in the 90s early 2000s before all the 9/11 and so on. She liked it and being able to help out her parents fly but she didn't like how a lot of the women were loose. What happens in Singapore stays in Singapore type stuff.
I don’t think I’d have a problem with that really, as long as they’re being safe what they do outside of the jobs not my business.
I know a few airlines I’d never want to work for, like spirit airlines. I went on that thing once and never again 😂.
I think it’d be cool to fly around the world though ^
Oh I know and I'm not saying it should bother you. I don't have first-hand information but I wanted to answer your question.
Of course there's something so romantic about traveling the world.
You're at an age where you still have a lot of resiliency so if you really were gung ho about it then go for it.
But it's like anything you have to find out what employer has a good environment for its employees. Especially when you're going to be up in a metal tube for hours on end.

One of my best friends is a flight attendant for Delta. It’s pretty awesome seeing the places he goes. Hotel states are free too.
The downside is having a super unstable schedule and no holidays off. I had him over for Thanksgiving. He technically wasn’t supposed to be here and he was on call. They don’t pay very well either when he’s not on a plane. He sometimes has to wait over half a day in an airport for the next flight and when he does he’s only being paid something like $3 per hour.
If traveling all over the place makes you happy and you’re not interested in saving for long term investments and you know that you’ll like the experience, I say go for it!
My cousin use to be a flight attendant, The stories she would tell 😲Now a days people can be crazy and out of control screaming throwing tamper tantrums.
She quit for that reason passenger are out of control 🙄 I was never a flight attendant but from what my cousin said it's not always all fun. Mind you she use to work for American Airlines. She quit after a customer was sleep walking. Your choice if you want to be a flight attendant but keep in mind you will come across with all different people nice and crazy 😧.
I've got a couple of friends who worked as flight attendants. The money's pretty good but the hours are gruelling. Long haul flights can be over 12 hours and the body isn't designed for that kind of work. As a result they had to sleep during the flights, sometimes for days at a time.
Take off in one time zone, land 10,000 miles later and an 8 hour time difference. That's OK until you're going backwards and forwards across the international date line.
But...
I'd have loved to try it if I could have passed the physical parameters.
I'm aiming to get a pilot's license eventually. It's not easy for a diabetic but the laws have changed in the last few years allowing me a chance to at least get a private license.
Good?
It depends on what you mean by good.
When you are young and single it seems like it would be a fun job to get the chance to get around the world and see a lot of things, lots of the country and world.
When you are married though it doesn't really seem like a good job due to the amount of time away from home and the endless chances to cheat while you are alone and separated.
Young and single... sounds like a good job.
Older and married... you are kind of stressing the marriage bond.
Maybe do it for a few years when you are young but when you want to settle down and start a long term relationship/family, quit and do something else.
It’s risky and dangerous due to standing up during turbulence and violent customers you have to control but if your brave and strong, it could be a good career, you get lots of days off work, get to travel the world, meet interesting people, look like a beauty Queen at work everyday and make high amounts of money even if you do not have a masters degree.
No. Because it's not all parties and what not. You're actually expected to work.
On long flights with irritate customers in small spaces. You have to be at the airport before the flights and as some are early that means sometimes getting to work at 5 or earlier in the morning. You have the hassle of time zones, dealing with cramped quarters and depending on the airline uncomfortable seats (attendants don't get regular seats and it's either at the front or at the back by the toilets).
. And for the time, work, being away from the house it's usually not good enough pay.
At first you'll be doing short flights multiple times a day and it won't be fun but if you stay in it and get more seniority you can have longer flights and maybe even some break time at the destination. But I think you also have to deal with a lot from people and you have a lot of responsibility. I don't think it will be fun most of the time.
I've known a couple girls that have had that job they really seem to enjoy it because I got to travel and they also got a lot of benefits are there eye off time when they wanted to fly somewhere for a vacation or something aren't they wanted a family member to come see them they got major discount
It's good IF you like flying. Scheduling sucks when you're junior to everyone (lots of people turn it into a long term career). Benefits fluctuate a bit from airline to airline but are generally only decent for yourself and do nothing for family members anymore.
Years ago it was. There are many retired flight attendants. Like everything else, airlines are looking towards the bottom line and try to cut everywhere they can. Salaries and benefits are not what they were. Also, most airlines are more like cattle cars these days and with covid there have been lots of fights that flight attendants have to deal with.
Probably would be for a couple years. I feel like if I had ever been a male flight attendant I'd have picked ages 30 to 35 to be one just because that's my personal preference because in my still now 20s I feel too lacking in how to handle unruly passengers. At 35 surely I'd have more strength and more common sense or life experience training 😅😳
Bad, you are subjected to higher radiation levels than the general public, you are exposed to high levels of coronavirus spewing unruly assholes and I highly doubt the work/life balance is fair. You are probably stuck in hotels all the time I think not like you can “see the sights”
At higher elevations there is less atmosphere to absorb radiation from space, it is a less problem than astronauts have to deal with but since you will be up there for longer (a career perhaps) the dose is higher plus you routinely have to walk through security checkpoints that scan you for weapons.
Be a truck driver if you want to see the sights, the pay is decent and it is very easy to get a cdl. 😂
But if flight attendant is your dream give it a try life is about experiencing new things 😌
Maybe. But you hear a lot of stuff about insane passengers on the plane. Did you hear about the guy they had to duct tape to his seat?
https://www.youtube.com/embed/QanMSAcpIcQNow a days, a flight attendant job is nothing but non stop stress.
The starting pay is lousy, you're on reserve, so you can be called any time of the day to report for work, usually a two hour time frame to show up for work on your assigned work days.
When you are on delay, you for the most part, don't get paid.
Out of town for days on end.
Lastly the unruly passengers, makes it not worth having this job.
Unsafe cause of Covid and interacting with people sucks but it can be fun to travel and get to know new places somewhat. Worth a try if you're careful about health and stuff. The experience might help if you ever want to move to a new country.
Your mom is confused.
It's a pretty shit job, being stuck in a tube with entitled, drunk and pissed off people for a few hours at a time, isn't for everyone.
Plus, the pandemic has killed off most of the jobs anyway
It’s a fairly difficult job to get now. People with degrees will most likely be considered first, as it’s been sought after.
I wouldn’t want my daughters to be a flight attendant now a days due to Covid plus with all the terrorist running around I’d be worried they’d try high jacking the plane and crashing it
Do you have any grander ambitions? Does it fit into them? If not, then no. Unless you want to get into airline management?
I agree with your mum, its a good temporary job
if your life goal is to be one though you need to get yourself some dreams 。゚ (TヮT) ゚。
Yeah but you’re never home. Also it’s tough to pass the schooling, or so I’ve understood from friends who have tried.
I wouldn't consider it until the vaccine side effects are known!
It’s a great career for your twenties. Not sure if I’d want it my whole life.
Yes. You travel around constantly and a lot of flight attendants party a lot. It’s literally a jet set lifestyle. A lot of people don’t wanna keep living that way when they get into their thirties and forties. Plus I imagine it would be hard to keep a long term boyfriend or girlfriend unless they worked for one of the airlines too.
Disclaimer: I’ve never been a flight attendant. This is all stuff I’ve heard from other people. Anything an actual flight attendant tells you should definitely supersede what I’m saying.
I think being able to travel is probably one of the perks for being a flight attendant.
I have no idea how much you're paid and if it's good for long-term. You'll need to do some research.
To me.. Not with covid, I think safty first. One person could have it and who knows what might happen to everyone on plane,... The. virus is. mutating getting more deadlier.. But to each their own, dont let me ruin. the vib, its up to you..
If you're only aspiring to be a waitress in life then sure, go for it.
Would be better if you have a security clearance, work for government airlines like with AECOM and USAF.
It would be like any job dealing with the public. There would be good days and bad days!
Traveling the world would be a nice perk. If that is what you would like to do.
Generally service industry work is not pleasant. An aircraft has maybe 1 attendant per 100 passengers so the odds that 1 of those passangers ruins your day somehow are pretty high.
It's a really good job, competitive so if you get it then you did well.
Not for BLM terrorists. Fly planes into buildings and call it a peaceful protest. yes... right...
Sounds fun... I wonder if airlines are transfriendly 😁
I meant to get a job as a flight attendant/ stewardess
It has crossed my mind in the past... I feel it could be fun to do for a while... It'd be gender affirming and I suffer from wanderlust.
No. Lol. Because the passengers are cray-cray and they will try to fight you.
No not with the constant battles with passengers over masks.
It awesome interesting and comes on with a lot of interesting things.
Well, it can be exhausting too, having to travel all the time
Yes you'd get to travel for free.
Yeah but you pretty much gotta be a model type chick for that
Say hello to sleep issues. It's not a good job long term. Changing time zones isn't good for you...
Not for me! I'm tall enough as it is!
If you like it go for it
Flying is not fun for me
That’s up to you if it’s a good job or not
yes i think it is a good career choice.
From which point view?
If you like it go for it
It could be
