Does music matter when dating?

Question

I listen to The Weeknd, but some guys listen to feminine music like Taylor Swift and all that. I don’t listen to feminine music though and i don’t listen to Taylor Swift.

It mattered to me a lot until I found out a year later that he didn't like my music. That was a shock to me, because it was very much a big part of our relationship for the first 4 months.
We listened to the 70's music. Damn, and he knew the words to every CD I would put on.

We even slow danced to that music. We made love to Barry White and he picked it out as we were going to bed.

Then just in one day, he never listened to my music again. He turned the TV on, but never the music 🎶. I felt like he was faking our whole relationship after he said that. Because I had no idea at all he didn't like it even though he would listen to it in the car.

Totally strange to me, even all of these years later. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Personally, it really matters to me. I only got interested in my last boyfriend bc we found out we were into the same music, and music is a big part of my life and personality. I couldn't be with someone who'd trash talk my music preferences or would want me to turn it off.

I listen to my playlist very often and one of my love languages is also making my partner playlists. I love when the get excited and want to show me a new song they found - plus, I wanna go on concerts together. It just makes things more fun, in my opinion.

Ok @zachgoat308 let me try clear up this fallacy for you. There's no such thing as FEMININE MUSIC, BLACK OR WHITE MUSIC. There's stigmas and closed-minded individuals who are too insecure to listen to certain music that sounds a particular way. Now I'm not knocking your decision on not listening to fkn Taylor Swift. That's the smartest thing you written in this question. Good job little buddy lol. Anyway, as far as other music, don't believe the hype or believe bs about music being FEMININE. Unless it's like lizzo or some other sht like that lol.

It’s just music.
You don’t have to be on the same music length to be compatible and complementary to your partner.
I listen to a lot of indie artist or none mainstream music and my partner listens to a lot of French music because of his cultural upbringing. He’s not big on my music cause it’s too ‘soft’ for him. We literally have a shared Spotify playlist for music we mutually agree to and thus usually what will play around the house if we are cooking for doing chores. But we both also have headphones…

To me, no. My husband does not like all the music I listen to and I don’t like all his music either.
If I had a partner that had the same music taste, that would definitely be a bonus but it’s not a dealbreaker for me clearly.

The only thing I can’t stand is when people think they’re better than you because of their music taste lol.

Like no you are not a better and more mature person than me just because I listen to more modern music and you listen to rock from the 70s. Want a cookie or something? 🙄🙄

It's not absolutely necessary, but the more things you have in common with someone, the more chemistry you'll have with them. Music taste differences can be dreadful on long drives. I'd hate if my partner was into Indian music, rap, or death metal and only wanted to play that in the car on a long drive.

If someone has a music taste that is on the opposite of the other, then a long term relationship is not likely going to work out well.

I could never date a person that is into noise music such as heavy metal and other cacophony.

I like the kind of music that is harmonious and not the one that I have to listen with earplugs.
