I suspect the "slut vs. stud" double standard, however it manifests, boils down to differences in reproductive design.

If we imagine a time predating paternity testing, a promiscuous woman who sleeps around who finds herself pregnant brings into question who the biological father is to share responsibility in raising the resulting children. A man who sleeps around with monogamous women raises no such question as to who the father is.

So I think that's why this pesky slut vs. slut distinction has a tendency to linger around and resurface in a variety of ways.

Yet I think if we go beyond our primitive instincts to ethical reasoning, it makes sense to favor monogamy in both men and women. Since it'd be horrible for society to consist of a bunch of irresponsible Casanovas planting their seeds wherever they can even if all women hypothetically valued monogamy.

So instead of embracing the double standard or eliminating it by saying both men and women should be promiscuous with the likes of slut-walks, I really think we should be encouraging both sexes to be monogamous. It should be just as shameful for a man to sleep around indiscriminately as a woman if we care about what's best for society and future children.
