How can you tell if a guy has asked you out on a date vs a hangout?

So this guy friend of mine texted me after a year of us not talking to each other, both of us had gotten busy. He had started working, I had started my post grad studies. Anyway, so he texted me asking me how I was and that he'd like to meet me on the weekend if I'm free.

I started asking him about his work and all so he said he won't tell me anything over text cause then I wouldn't want to meet him I was like ok lol and just laughed it off saying we'll surely meet soon. He again texted me the next month asking me my plans for the week and asking to meet again over the weekend, I was out of town and told him so. He was like ok we'll meet when you get back. I was like sure.

Is he asking me out on a date or is he just wanting to hangout? He is attractive and we have shared a good friendship in the past.
