I have been talking to this girl for a couple months. We have never established that we are dating but we go on 'dates'. and recently it has progressed to cuddling in bed.

I asked her to cuddle and she lay down and I was slow to see how she would react if I touched her. she didn't say anything and i was touching her upper thigh for a while. I tried to progress towards her breasts and i asked her if it was okay and she said nothing and then said no no.

Then she tells me she still talks to her ex and feels bad about doing stuff with me.

Im not very sexually experienced but I don't understand why she is cuddling with me holding my hands intimately and letting me touch her in intimate areas but then backs out now.

my friends say to back off and give her space but Im really into her?

She likes you but is not completely resolved with her "ex" so she starts feeling guilty when you get too close to "the good stuff." That means that she is not emotionally available and, at best, you will probably be only a rebound. Are you context with having sex a few times and then breaking up?

She's not necessarily "playing" you. She probably likes you in a romantic sense, but she's not ready to let go of her ex. She shouldn't keep stringing you along cuz she's afraid of being alone and women do that all of the time.

Women don't like to admit it, but they all can't live without attention from men. They crave it and that's one of the reasons that they claim they have "male friends". In reality those friends are nothing more than a pool of possible backup boyfriends. That way they're never without male attention. It's actually very selfish for them to do this. Especially since they know for a fact that everyone of those guys wants to date/fuck them.

The problem is that they think the "male friends" pool of backups ploy will work forever, but it doesn't. The sooner you accept this, the easier the whole thing gets.

Don't date women that still think that male friends are purely platonic.
