Because oftentimes a woman will reluctantly agree to start dating a guy whom she was lukewarm about to begin with, and perhaps subconsciously is hoping for him to make a big stumble, to confirm her suspicions -- 'I knew I couldn't trust this guy -- what a dunce!', etc.
