When is it the "right" time to start a relationship?

A year ago I became really good friends with a guy. About 4 months in he started to get flirty with me which made me feel a little uncomfortable and soon asked me out. I was so overwhelmed by this sudden "fawning" over me that I flatly refused to go out with him. I thought it was too soon!

What are your thoughts on when to take the friendship to the next level?

Drives me insane; When a guy has clear interest women they reject them or feel their interest is suspect because its way too interested too early (the case where their interest is only surface and therefore they aren't loving the girl herself loses merit when no girl is looking for an ugly guy who knows them better). This they trains guys to be unsure, disconnected or out right uncertain and suddenly the girls all see this as the guy being dateable [and like it means they are going to fall for the real girl] then get insecure again themselves because the guy isn't like he was at the beginning before they broke his heart the first time around.

The right time to persue a relationship is whenever a person finds someone deeply attractive, are single and honestly ready to attempt to connect with just that person, and someone whos showing every sign of loving them back (and when your also prepared to try equally hard with them as they are with you).

Whilst doubting is fine, make it about yourself not about suspicion of the other persons lack or over abundance of care.

It really depends on where you see him... as a friend or more.
The fact that you started as friends means it could go either way. Often one of you will get feelings and he has been the first one to feel that. That then poses the question... do you see him as potentially more than a friend? If the answer is yes, then flirt back. If you see him only as a friend, tell him.
