+1 yI just dressed very comfortably, not to impress, typically t-shirts and jeans and sneakers. I would shave and double-check to make sure there was no shaving cream on my ear.
There's a bit of an "I don't give a shit," mentality but it's not because I don't care about my date. I do deeply wish she will stick around or else I wouldn't have asked her out in the first place.
But if I try too hard to impress her and that's the only way she sticks around, then I'd have to try so hard to impress her for the rest of our entire relationship and I can't sustain that. What I can sustain is shaving my face and wearing t-shirts and jeans and sneakers. So that's how I always approached the first date. If she ditches me based on that, I figure it would have never worked in the long run.
On nice dates like at a 7-course French restaurant, I could really dress sharp even in a tailored suit. But I never started first dates or anything close with such fancy settings.

My first dates have always been more like beer and pizza, not champagne and caviar, or even picnics, amusement parks, things of this nature. Cheap dates and not because I wasn't willing to spend more money on her and our date, but because I wasn't willing to spend that every single day for the rest of our relationship. I was looking for a wife the whole time; someone I could spend the rest of my life with, and so I only did things I could sustain doing on a regular basis for first dates.

It's kind of similar to my communication style on here. I know I turn some people on this site off with my almost essay-like and long-winded approach to writing; it hurts me a little bit every time I scroll through the answers and find that comment that I can't read from someone who blocked me.
I could change that but then it wouldn't be me as I naturally am, it would be me trying to be who others want me to be, and I can't sustain that. So being our true selves can sometimes mean losing people we want to keep, but it also means the people who stay will stay even if we remain our true selves the entire time. - +1 y
It's a filter as I see it. So as much as I'm disappointed to see people leave me for being the truest to myself, I don't want to change it because I'll always settle back to it over the long run. I can only pretend for so long. So it's a gain, a disappointing gain, when a date doesn't want to continue because I dressed no better than I usually do on a daily basis. It is better for both of us that she leaves if she doesn't like it, that I didn't go the extra mile to impress her and just remained comfortable both fashionably and conversationally, because if she wants a man to impress her and continue to impress her, she is better off with someone else. Because I'm not that guy.

@Linda7451 Cheers! š¤I like it too when my date dresses comfortably. We're both down-to-earth now and on equal footing and can see each other as we might normally would for the rest of our lives, and that always seemed to bypass the barriers of formality which I always saw as inhibitive to developing the deepest mutual understanding.

Here , I think its easier because no matter where you are going its hot , really hot , so even if it were a " major " here , say Hilton , Flavours , or 50th floor place a light summer dress would work , most things are pretty casual.

+1 yDepends where the date is. Wear what others would wear at the same place. A woman at a picnic would probably involve shorts and cute top, while a fancy restaurant would probably involve a cute dress.

Oops wrong post
+1 yDepending on whether the place your goings to is fancy or not. Otherwise, I would say be casual and wear something you feel comfortable in. I used to dress to impress but felt at times I was too overly dressed. When I changed to just being comfortable, focus swifted towards her than me overthinking about my outfit.

+1 ySomething that made you feel confident but still fits the mood or setting. Could be a hoodie and jeans or a black dress and a necklace. For me I like a jacket with nice jeans and a tshirt.
