Can we talk vs we need to talk- is there a difference?

There is a big difference.. . Can we talk means when you're not busy I really have something that I need to say to you when you're ready...

We need to talk is more of a demand more of a controlling type scenario

There’s a power imbalance suggested in the verbiage. Even if there is no actual power imbalance, “Can we talk?” projects a willingness to communicate like a partner, an equal. “We need to talk.” suggests that the speaker either has more power or is taking control, and they likely will spend more time talking at their partner than to them. They’re not interested in compromise. They don’t really “need to talk”. They’re just there to show you who’s boss.

The latter carries more seriousness, and usually trouble- I've decided that if I ever start dating again, at some point I'm going to have a conversation that consists of "We need to talk- you aren't eating enough bacon cheeseburgers, and I've decided to fix that; here's one right now", just so that at least ONCE in the timeline of the universe, that phrase isn't followed by something nasty.

Yeah. The first says you have something on your mind you'd like to talk about when it's convenience. The latter is more demanding. It doesn't necessarily say, but can suggest it has to happen or else.

"Can we talk" is like just a request but "we need to talk" is like there is something serious.
