No, it is certainly not hygienic and it may need more than an in-depth cleaning and sanitizing.

A lot of people are not very hygiene minded when they allow pets on their couch or other pieces of furniture. Also, you never know what kind of other activities have taken place on that couch and what traces those activities have left. You may not see them initially but the thought alone is more than just disgusting.

You are much better off to buy something new, even if you have to pay a little extra but then you have the peace of mind that you are given something that has not been soiled and stained with God know's what.
