Why do short men have to have such a hard time trying to date?

The truth of reality is that not all people are born equal. And the majority of women prefer bigger, taller, stronger, and older men. Just as the majority of men prefer smaller, shorter, weaker, and younger girls. There is a biological dominant submissive dynamic between men and women. Short men literally drew the short straw. It doesn't mean they won't find a girl for themselves. There are plenty of short guys that have found love. But it does mean they'll have a tough time competing with the guys at the top of the dating market.

Because we've engineered much of a man's utility to women out of society. Women largely now look at men as just an accessory or a status symbol. It's the OPINION of women that shorter men are of lower status. It's silly of course. But until the majority of women start dating for the reason it was intended I'm afraid this will persist. And that won't happen till women are forced to. And that might not ever happen again. It's funny I had a conversation with a woman just the other day that said this has to change. I told her "no it doesn't".

Whatever the reason, it's not because they are short. If they aren't dating, they need to be looking somewhere else. As long as they keep blaming their height, they won't figure out the real reason (s).

If we're talking about livelihood, short men don't have any more or less lifespan than taller men, and are scientifically proven to live longer than tall men. Protection? A lot of tall men run from fights, a lot of short men don't. Height doesn't determine this.
