Went on an amazing date, was asked on a second, and then randomly got rejected?

A mutual friend dmd me and we got to talking. A little while later, he asked me on a date to dinner. He picked me up and things went really well (at least I thought so). We talked easily and the whole thing was really familiar and fun. We made plans to go on a second date in a few days before we both went on vacation! That night, after he dropped me off, I texted him that I had a great night and for him to let me know about the second date’s plans because I’d like to see him again. He texted and reciprocated and we began planning the second date that night and the next morning. Then randomly, later that next day, he told me he wasn't interested in being with anyone and he thought he was, but he was wrong. Im just really lost :(

Update: The dinner was at a casual Chinese restaurant and the second date planned was to breakfast.
