There was a whole Romantic Era (~1780–1850)... You can look it up easily enough.

Women still weren't treated very well, though slavery was starting to be identified and dismissed as an immoral act against humanity (on paper more than in practice)... And the concept of MINDFULNESS and self-awareness were just starting to surface. The middle class was blossoming, nobility was at an odd decline... This and several other sociological markers are humorously portrayed in the collective works of Jane Austen (~1787-1817), though there are weaker, snarkier writers from that period whose work ends with the not-so-happy endings for their heroes as a sort of anti-Romanticist reality check... Many times, Romanticists were considered to basically just have their heads in the clouds... sort of an emotional, horny bunch who acted on passion more than reason.

It rounds off with the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and is a very major influence on what's popularly called "Victorian Literature" ... get's plowed to hell when her immature, bratty kids kick off the world wars... and lands on the modern world with an existential "THUD" like an alien concept no one knows what to do with...

You see the effects of it very prevalently in Europe more than in the US (we had hippies in the 60s-70s, then the GenX mess (myself included) and now the younger lot with their dysfunctional "no labels" attitude. Sigh...

Back in those eras, you had the music, clothing style, films, TV shows, and the words. Purity was big deal back then, when you tell someone you love them or I am in love with you, sing romantic song to someone, dance romantic with the one you love or say a poet, it met something big. Nowadays, the fundamentals are weak and those days are gone meaning there's nothing really pure like that no more.

The Victorian age knew how to do it. I quite like taking a date to a Victorian era boat house for a devonshire tea followed by rowing her gently up the river.

I think Jane Austen died 207 years ago yesterday, which would have been a century and a day before my mother was born-she would have been 107 and my Aunt Esther 91 today.

Out of these the Art Deco period of the early 30s. But, Regency beats it hands down.
