If a guy says we should grab coffee sometime, is he suggesting a date?

Yes, most likely.

When I was about your age -- you know, back when the only tables around had commandments on them -- this guy would walk over with a shy smile and ask me, "Do you drink coffee?" (I usually had a coffee in my hand, so the question seemed odd, but...) I'd always say yes and nod towards my cup. He'd answer, "Oh." and clam up. He must have done that 15? 20? 25 times? It took him forever to let me know what he meant by it. He just wanted to take me out for a coffee. It's a nice, basic first date.

It's a low key way to take a first step in seeing if she is interested. If she says yes and they go for coffee, it gives them a chance to chat and for him to ask her out on a real date. Of course he pays the bill for the coffee (mini) date to show that he's a gentleman.
