Can people really tell someones character upon first impression?

I get told Im very sweet a lot by people I dont know or had just met. Literally, I met a few guys off a dating app and over on our first 10 minute phone conversation, they remarked at how sweet I was. I said " how would you know that? We spoke over the phone for 10 mins?"

When I was rented an apartment, i handed over the cash and the groundskeeper didn't bother counting the stack of bills. He said he trusted me that I would pay the correct amount. Apparently he knew I was an honest person just by a few interactions.

Im just shocked at how some people can make judgments about ones Character so quickly. How are people so sure of themselves putting so much reliance on assumptions?

Yeah. You can tell when there's something shady about the person. But if you choose to ignore that initial instinct you can end up stuck with someone who is not good for you.
