Why would a guy who’s seperated invite me to stay at his place?

I was talking to a guy I’ve been friendly with for years and he said he’s is still married but lives separate from his wife, then he invited me to stay with him if Im visiting his state one day.
I’m not sure if it would be right and even to trust him, or if it’s appropriate to stay there, why are they living separately if still married? Any advice would be really helpful.

Could be a number of things. Maybe he doesn’t have the money to divorce her right now. Maybe she kicked him out cause she wasn’t happy. Maybe he cheated on her so she kicked him out. Maybe he wasn’t happy w things she’s been doing or not doing that he moved out. A lot of times they say “it’s cheaper to keep her.” Me sing financially if he got a divorce he’d probably pay an arm and a leg for it. Couldn’t really tell you. Maybe he’s still w her but lying to you to try to get you to sleep w him. If I was you I wouldn’t go for it.

There is not enough information, if they are married and are planing to get a divorce, then it's somehow acceptable, if there is no STABLE grounds then why do you have to waste your time and energy?
I would first try to understand what is actually going on
