Why do some people treat people they supposedly have feelings for very poorly?

I've had more than one guy in the past treat me poorly by making fun of me or just generally being an asshole, and then it slips out from either them or a friend of theirs that they liked/were interested in me. Why would they treat me this way, then? Including making fun of my looks.

Because it's little boys... they express their emotions through bullying you, and teasing you. Which as a matter of fact is a massive turn off and immature.
Be a man about it or move on... this is how i'd respond to them

Some people learn through abuse that abusing is the response to an abusive world they experienced. The primary goal of well-being is to avoid these people and find the good guys :)

Because they're bored and you're thirsty

I wasn't thirsty though, these were people I never showed interest in. Usually people at school or work that I was forced to be around.
