Is it a buzz kill if your SO doesn't want to dress up for Halloween?

My boyfriend known before we started dating that I love Halloween I plan my costume months in advance. He's acting all surprised saying he didn't know it was important to me and he hasn't dressed up since he was 15. Now he's going to dress up but only because he feels obligated to... I told him not to do that because he won't be happy and neither will I knowing the reason he's doing it. Now the enjoyment has been sucked out of it for me.

We've been together 2 years. 1st year we didn't spend together because I lived 2 hours away, last year I was pregnant so I didn't feel well.

Yeah I love Halloween because especially if you have a girlfriend she can dress up her I can dress her up or whatever but yeah it's one of my favorite times of the year too

Well yeah it’s a bit of a buzzkill when your partner isn’t as enthusiastic as you are about things like Halloween and dressing up but it is what it is.


My boyfriend also isn’t big on holidays and wouldn’t celebrate at all if it weren’t for me and my family. He also is not a big fan of disneyworld (or theme parks in general) the way that I am, and wouldn’t go often if it weren’t for me. But I can appreciate his willingness to compromise and at least participate in my hobbies/traditions/etc. In your case I think it’s worth adopting a similar mindset. No, he may not love Halloween, he may not care to plan months in advance and go all out. But he’s willing to put the costume on, and rather than make a big stink about it, I’d be content with that.

Nah.. I used to really love Halloween back in the day but I don't care that much about it now.. If my partner isn't into what I am into I don't really care that is his choice but hopefully I have some friends into the same things..

Don’t allow his decision to stop you from enjoying something you like to do , Your partner doesn’t have to like everything you like to do and vice versa , if he doesn’t want to dress up , that’s his decision , so just Celebrate without him , if he wants to be a party pooper let him be a party pooper. I have a Halloween costume party every year and I love dressing up , but I have some friends that choose not to dress up , that still come over to hang out, i just call them party poopers , it’s really not that big of a deal we still have fun. I know I do whether they do or not. Usually the ones that choose not to dress up will eventually complain that they should have dressed up.

Okay so, don’t let your boyfriend be a stick in the mud. Dress up for yourself & your happiness to get back into the holiday season. Maybe even decorate around the house too, just to spice things up. You could also put a skeleton on the outside or something. You don’t need to force him to do something he doesn’t enjoy, though that also doesn’t mean you can’t do it for your own happiness too. I know it is last minute, just think of something since you missed out 2 years so you deserve this year to go differently. Maybe a buzz kill for you, but from the guy's perspective this sounds like a "damned if I do, damned if I don't situation." He is willing to dress up for you. You should consider accepting that compromise.

I'll give an example for clarity: I am openly a huge fan of classical music and like going to the Segerstrom Center for concerts. If I am dating a lady and invite her, she might not be as big of a fan. Should I tell her "Nevermind, you are just doing this to make me happy." because she is not as enthusiastic about it as I am?

In general I don't like dressing up and I also haven't done it since I was kid and I thought it was dumb in college BUT, if it was important to my girlfriend, I would dress up and I would put a little effort into it.

I doubt ladies love hearing me talk about military history and campaigns marching across countries, nor my non stop love and talk of sports and video games. You have to make compromises because the people you love are different than you, it sounds like your boyfriend doesn't see it that way.

This is one of those problems that is so incredibly insignificant that it shouldn't even count as a problem.

You're into Halloween. Your boyfriend isn't. He's willing to dress up for you. You're not forcing him to shove pins under his fingernails. He might feel a little foolish, but he isn't going to resent that he had to dress up. His costume won't be as cool as yours, because he didn't put as much thought into it as you did yours, but that's fine.

He might enjoy it more than he thinks he will. And if he doesn't, it's not like he was being tortured.

Be grateful that he's willing to dress up because it's important to you, and leave it at that. Enjoy your big night.
