Based on your reaction to him confronting you about it. Personally I would have left you already.

The alternative to him being controlling is to just enforce his boundaries.

If he can't even talk to you about it without you mentioning the words "controlling", what option do you leave him with. The behaviour is unacceptable to him, your not willing to discus, adapt or change.

He will either spiral into more controlling behaviour or enforce his boundaries, ie... Leave.

The thing that's important for guys is to realize you do what makes you happy , help others do things that physically and mentally challenge you all this gives you confidence. When you enter a room not only will women notice it but other guys will which is the bigger compliment and the more difficult to attain. And no I am not gay.
