Why do people say personality matters in dating?

I have always been on the outside looking in because either faults with my appearance or personality have always been a thing. Like when I personally say oh I’m not good looking enough people say I’m stupid for focusing on appearance when girls look at the personality as well of a guy. But my counter to that argument is I’m a gentleman I’m respectful I treat everyone with kindness I good doors for everyone doesn’t matter age or gender. I always help if there is an opportunity. The thing I then get is you’re too nice and women see you as soft which is far from the truth because you can still be a gentleman and still have a backbone

Women usually say that you need a good personality or that is what they care about to seem more virtuous than they are. Or they are just lying to themselves and don't know that their choices don't match up with what they are saying.

It's seriously testing the waters to be with them permanently. Would you want to spend time with someone near 24/7 if you don't get along at all?
