I was in a 3-year relationship with my ex, which ended last May. Now, I like someone new, but the weird part? He has the same name as my ex. We all went to high school together, so there’s some history there too. Honestly, I’m trying not to let a name stop me, but I’m curious—could you date someone with the same name as your ex?
I've dated four girls who were named some variation of Jennifer. Two went by Jen/Jenn, one Jenny and the other actually went by her middle name of Faith. None could stand being called Jennifer. One because that was the name her parents called when she was in trouble which knowing her was very often. The others felt it was too personal or for Faith it was because she just didn't like her first name. Because of all of this though I guess it never seemed like any kind of issue. Them having the same name didn't make them seem like the same person and even though two of them were bad break ups it didn't make anything awkward with the others. I guess it just boils down to the fact they were their own people and to me the name was just part of who they were not the most important aspect of them so it never became an issue. Three of them knew each other previous to me dating them so that was never an issue either. Hell I actually went to one of their weddings with another of them.
Short of it all is it shouldn't matter. They are different people and I think you should focus on who they are as a person not on what their name is.

If I let that deter me from dating Hispanic women w the same last, I might as well move onto a different race of women. I think if you’re having issues w the last name, you still have issues that need to be resolved in regards to your ex.

Anonymous(30-35)1 yI suppose it depends on the name. If it's something super common then it's bound to happen. I had a one night stand with a guy named Michael. Then I dated a guy named Michael. Then I had another one night stand with my friend. He name was also Michael. My new coworker is named Michael. Sometimes it just happens...

1 yYeah unfortunately for me my ex's name is one of the most common names known to man so the likelihood is high that I might meet another Michael. I don't think it's weird when it's a common name.

1 yWhen I was younger, I dated several girls in a row whose name was a variation of Christine: Kris, Chris, Christa...
Then, later on, I dated several Linda's (or Lynn's) in a row.
None of this was planned. It just happened.
Based on my experience... dating someone with the same name as your ex is not unusual.
20 Reply 1.3K opinions shared on Dating topic. It happens. Throughout our lives we're going to meet people anyway who have the same name as someone else. Even in a relationship. It's only weird if you make it weird.
10 Reply3.2K opinions shared on Dating topic. It can seem weird but not that big of a deal , it’s actually better so you don’t mistakenly say your exes name to them lol
10 ReplyIt might be a bit tricky, especially if there’s a lot of history with your ex. Dating someone with the same name could bring up old memories or make you subconsciously compare them to your past relationship. If you're still healing or have unresolved feelings about your ex, it might make things harder than they need to be. It could be worth taking a step back to make sure you're truly ready for something new without the past lingering.

Asker1 yThank you for your thoughtful advice! You’re right, it could bring up some old feelings or make comparisons happen
It's not like he has the same name as your ex on purpose. His name is the same but he's an entirely different guy. Still, I know what you mean I had a crush on a girl in my school as a kid, but she had the same name as my sister, and it always felt weird for some reason even though the two of them had never even met.
10 Reply4.5K opinions shared on Dating topic. It can be difficult to date anyone who shares the same name as someone who you are closely associated with. My sister refuses to date anyone with the same name as me. I probably wouldn't date anyone with the same name as her either. I could do my mother, because I don't call her by her name, though.

For a second there, I thought you wanted to do your mother.
It might feel a little odd at first, but names don’t define the person. If you genuinely like this new guy and feel a connection, the name shouldn’t hold you back. Everyone is unique, and comparing him to your ex may only stop you from seeing the potential for something new and different. Give it a chance, and see if the connection deepens beyond the name sometimes, it's the unexpected things that lead to the best relationships.

Asker1 y’ll try to focus on what’s unique about him and see where it goes. Thanks
It’s not weird to date someone with the same name as your ex, as long as you’re not holding on to the past. The name doesn’t define the person, and each relationship is different. If you’re genuinely interested in this new person, let that connection be about who they are, not just their name. It’s natural to feel some hesitation, but if you both have a strong bond, it shouldn’t stop you. The past is behind you, and this is your chance to create something new.

A name is just a name. Dating someone with the same name as your ex shouldn't matter at all. The plus is you can't accidentally call them the wrong name.

1 yAll my girlfriends until now had the same name: ''darling'' ... :D
Names are a label to identify someone - not much more. So the only weird thing I see is to be worried about some name :)
00 Reply 13.4K opinions shared on Dating topic. There aren't all that many names in common use. My ex had the same name as one of my preteen crushes. I wouldn't reject a women with that name.

1 yThe name shouldn't matter. It's the person, and if you're going to compare the two or look for similarities or stuff like that, I would recommend waiting a while longer.

1 yIt's not unusual just as long they don't act like your ex. Ex's are ex's for a reason.
