You must have been so obvious when you interacted with that guy that people started gossiping about you and him.

If you want your co-workers not to notice, then you should have remained neutral about him and not interact to such an extent that people started to think that there is something going on between you and him. That is the most basic behavior when working with others.

I presume that you had a crush on him and that this crush was not reciprocated otherwise, he would have let you know that he was leaving the company.
