Yesterday, I took a huge risk. I told a man I’m interested in dating that I’ve got a dual diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome and paranoid schizophrenia. They’re both mild and the schizophrenia hardly impacts my life, except for working and driving and a bit of weight gain.
I was really frightened to tell this man, who has Asperger’s, but is mentally healthy and works. He’s also getting his own house. So he’s really got his life together in ways that I haven’t. I thought it would be really shocking to him-I present as an attractive, well dressed and charismatic, intelligent person to people who don’t know. They don’t see the issues under the surface.
I felt ashamed, defective; and sure that he’d lose interest, but he said he’s still definitely interested in dating me and that he wants to take care of me. He’s told me how beautiful and nice he thinks I am. He said no one’s perfect and everyone has problems and he’s continued to court me since then.
