What are the steps to buy a car? What questions do I need to ask and ensure I have no hidden fees, etc. with the car dealer?

I have not bought a car in a long time on my own (about 20 years ago) so I am skeptical and nervous about getting one now. I am a single woman and so I am nervous going into this again. I want to give as much a down payment as possible so as not to have to pay so much interest.

Aside from payment options you should be accompanied by someone with mechanical knowledge capable of looking under the hood and seeing what’s what.


If you walk in as a single woman with no car experience telling the guy there that you haven’t bought a car on your own in 20 years, will 100% try to take advantage of that to sell you a junker that no one else would buy

New or used? If you are buying a used car, find an independent mechanic who will inspect a car before purchase. If the dealer won't agree, then find another dealer.

Some of them let you take it to a dealer AFTER you buy, then give you options on returning it if things dont go well.

Just say no. After they have your money you have no leverage. If they won't let you take the care for independent inspection before purchase, just walk away Renée.

Nowadays if you want a decent no haggle price use your Costco membership if you have one. For real they pre negotiate and many times it's a really fair deal and better than most people can negotiate alone.

as long as you have the car guaranteed/waranteed you should be fine. don't go to the financier.

If you belong to the Automobile Club (worth joining if you do not) they will assist you in buying a car.
