I'm looking at possibly getting a small type of SUV possibly 2nd hand/ used car but I'm wondering what are some things I need to be careful of and what should I be checking so that I am not sold a lemon car that isn't road worthy?
Paint thickness, this show if a car had a severe accident. (you can buy for 50$ a tools to measure that)
Mileage. Some car sellers cheat with mileage and there are lot of indications to check real car mileage. Brake disc thickness, used up pedals and steering wheel, used up seats... etc.
Engine/Electronic errors. A car has ton of electronic components which generate errors, not all critical errors are displayed with a warning light or on LCD of a car. It's good idea to check a car by someone who has a tool to read out errors. You can ask car dealer if he is willing to print out error log of the car after test drive. (not before, because they can delete previous error logs)
Oil leaks. Newer cars shouldn't have any oil leaks (with exception of BMW, they leak already as brand new cars, i drive one XD)There are specialized website services where you can check history of a car with VIN (Vehicle ID number) for few bucks.

If you need to ask. You really should bring it to a mechanic for a multipoint inspection before purchase. There’s too many things which can be wrong to cover.
