About used cars... are you allowed to have them checked out by your own mechanic before you buy?

Or take the car for a test drive and drive to a friendly mechanic. If they refuse , ask them if they can put the car on a hydraulic ramp for your guy to inspect. If they refuse that, walk away.

Yes, and you should do this, if the seller will agree to it. If they won't, THAT is a red flag.

As a side example. When people sell a motorcycle local you have to pay full cash to test ride it. It's way too risky for the seller.

Just go to a carfax authorized used car dealership. They are more extensively covered.

Some places will let you do a pre-inspection, but you usually have to pay a small fee and agree that any damage is your responsibility.

Yes, I like the Acura MDX. I would be getting a used one, which is why I want someone to look at it before I buy one. They would know if it was in an accident or has anything faulty. I wouldn't trust the dealers as they just want you to buy their cars. Also, I am a woman and so they will try to sell me anything, do doubt.
By the way I was born in Brooklyn! Only born. Raised in Manhattan.

Nice! I knew there was something special about you.😉 Make sure you ask the for a carfax that gives you the whole history on the vehicle. It lets you know if it's been in any accidents how many owners it's had and those are things you need to know before you buy

Yes, I will certainly look at Carfax documents. There is one Acura dealer that is trying to charge you for one, when it should be free. I like both Acura and Toyota.
I am in Ohio and that would be tricky 😉, but thanks anyway. I have some people in mind that I can bring so that I'm not alone, or in case I forget to ask them something important.

Just tell them what you want. It's prudent to have a used car checked by a mechanic you trust. If they won't allow it, I would be very suspicious and move on. Also check the Used Car review section of Consumer Reports.

You can negotiate anything you want with the seller. I'm not aware if there are state or local laws that prohibit it. When buying from an individual owner, it's an especially good idea.
